Alcohol and early intervention

Alcohol use at dangerous level is a challenging problem for government and society. Globally, it causes drink driving accident and also responsible for violence and derailment of the career of young people. Various strategies have been adopted at the policy level to reduce the harm. For instance, increasing tax including minimum unit price and a ban on the advertisement . However, people are still facing difficulty in fighting with alcohol harm . Hence, alcohol falls in the bracket of a wicked problem, which means problems which are difficult to remove due to the complex amalgamation of factors.

There are more than 200 diseases which can cause by heavy alcohol intake. Unfortunately, alcohol can be addictive which can further lead to social problems such as domestic violence. Often problem of alcohol diagnosed at a very late stage and nothing much can be done. For example, surgeons treat chronic pancreatitis, however till time much damage has occurred in the patient. Similarly, a chronic drinker often comes to a psychiatrist for help. However, these help are mostly a medical management. Hence, the role of early intervention is important regarding harmful alcohol use.
A public health person can deal at grass root level and can influence at the population level. For example, providing brief intervention at university setting can be a helpful strategy for reducing the harm caused by alcohol. Therefore, a preventive approach is vital in fighting with the ill effect of alcohol on our society.
